Some mainland continental countries have always celebrated the incoming year with fireworks and I have thoroughly enjoyed them for many a year.
The Guy Fawkes thing is always a bit bizarre - the celebration of a FAILED attempt to overthrow the government in 1605??? And we think we're progressive??

:lol: I haven't been tested for this but it's been proven to the satisfaction of my GP and hosptial consultant - excessive dairy products give me the most horrible and nasty and disgusting sinusitis!
For many years I suffered really bad bouts of it, most of which need massive doses of antibiotics and weeks off work until it was discovered.
Strawberries make me itch like mad... probably wheat bloats me out but I wouldn't go as far as saying it's an allergy, more an intolerance.

Just got me thinking about times spent waiting for 1)Gasman to visit to sort cooker; 2) plumber to visit to sort washing machine; 3) Postman to visit with parcels; 4) Tesco's to visit with online shopping order..and buses don't work to timetable; trains fail to arrive or depart on time; a visit to the shops for a particular item is in vain.... and so on and so on.. all time wasted and all a pain in the neck!
Nothing different here, and why would it be??
HOWEVER when the timing is right, the people are right and the play is right then the outcome is awesome!

Flipping heck... that's a trawl. I once did (in my youth) 7 long days straight in A&E in a hospital in Glasgow's South Side over Christmas and New Year. My split shifts all joined up into one huge shift, mind I soon learnt to do stitching and other non-nurse stuff!
Even though I 've left those days behind my thoughts are always with those on the front line of whatever enemy is theirs. Poverty, ill health, war, pestilence, the general public and all the rest.

Fair comment and whilst we are all aware of the invaluable services of the personnel you mentioned, the thread was originally intended to remember those that won't be able to simply return to their home after their shift has finished on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, etc, etc...
I did not include such personnel because I did not want to dilute the thread. It was intended to be an armed forces "remember them at Christmas" thread.

May I extend my thoughts and best wishes and those of my familiy to anyone from the Mercian Regt. still out there in the various theatres of operation across the globe.
Yes, but I did want to extend it to include all those who are working away from home at Christmas and New Year - many of those not abroad are doing long shifts, overnight shifts and need to respond to any emergency which eats into their time with their families too.
