Okay.... so now we are almost 10,000 cases in, and 13 deaths in.... are we now anymore nervous than we were before???
Just speaking to a friend and it sounds like her son has it, so because her son friend stayed last night, the 3 of them are now confined for the next 7 days and the tamiflu is being sent out......

Nope.
There are still eight people killed on our roads EVERY day of the equates to nearly 3000 every year. Also in 2007 there were over people injured on the roads.
Does that kind of put things into perspective? In the last ten days 80 people have been killed.
Most of those people that have died had underlying health problems. Swine flu was not the main cause of their deaths so....I think three people have now been linked with this that caused their deaths.
How many people die every winter through our normal flu outbreak? I cannot guess the figures but I bet it runs into hundreds if not thousands every year.
Sorry but I am a lot more concerned about the figures on our roads, or the infections you catch from a hospital that have killed far more people than swine flu has and probably will.
I'm agreeing with Kenty.
Quick, fetch me the Tamiflu...
It's when neighbours fight over a leylandii lol
Roight, simply put, it's a sociological theory/concept mainly dealing with leadership of the masses. However, it also theorises that we're "farmed" into a certain position in our culture, and that our edukashon system is tailored to that cause, rather than personal choice. And...there's the theory that we're fed stuff from the moment we're born to make us want to consume, and aspire to be ever greater consumers in order to keep the economy ticking over.
If I've got the wrong word, I'm gonna look such a tit. rolleyes

Doesn't modern society spurn original thought and make every effort to divert us away from it through education and conditioning?
dunno Just a thought. ;-)

Absolutely. The concept of cultural hegenomy is an interesting one.

I can't get my head around being "proud" of something I had no part in. However, I know that if I could, there are bloody great swathes of our history I'm actually pretty damn ashamed of.

... but if there are bits you can feel ashamed of (historically), there must be bits you can be proud of too as you will have had nothing to do with the good or the bad historically speaking?
Don't understand the accident of birth thing - well I do but it just seems an odd way of seeing things, it's sort of irrelevant, like being born male/female ... it just 'is' ...
Having just read it back it's missing half a sentence :scratches head: The "if I could" bit was meant to be expanded on, as in "if I could feel pride, I'd feel ashamed too..." etc.
Kenty, I can't understand how on the one hand you're so incredibly proud to be British, and in countless other topics telling us how appaling the country is. You're always saying how, effectively, too much tolerance has caused the problems we have- and now saying we're the "most tolerant country around" in a positive way. dunno
I'm soooo wishing I hadn't heard Lily Allen's "Fuck you"- it's way too damn catchy. redface

Ones nationality is determined mainly by ones accident is not how I would view it.
It is not just about nationalities but culture.
Yes there is a lot wrong with this country, I have said it many times but...every country have their problems.
We have great history and some not so great. Why is it that people born and bred here, always focus on our past negativities?
Simply yinging your yang.
There have been some great positives and we were once the greatest nation on the planet. Without us many things may not have been invented for many years after, if at all.
Hence the name Great Britain. 'Fraid not. As far as I'm aware, the "Great" simply meant larger- the "lesser" being Brittany. For we once was the greatest and that is part of our positive history.
I still can't see the empire building as a positive...
If my nationality was an " accident at birth ", then I thank my lucky stars and my parents.

Your nationality was something you had no control over- an accident of birth. You may consider it to have been a lucky one. However, if you'd been born Iranian, or a German, or a Guatemalan...chances are you'd be proud of a different nationality.
Erm, thank you. Very kind I'm sure.
If you figure out how a foetus can telepathically influence where their mum goes into labour & registers the birth- please let me know. I quite fancy having New Zealand born grandkids- it'd be great for holidays. biggrin

Our " historical baggage " is not what I would call it. It is our history for which we should be proud of. Yes not all of it but what country anywhere can say all their history is something to be proud of?
I think this country is one of, maybe even the most , tolerant country in the world.
Our cultures and our way of life I would never change. I am proud to be English, am proud of our heritage, I am proud of our history. Anyone who is not is not living in the right country.
Plane ticket to Afganistan anyone?

I can't get my head around being "proud" of something I had no part in. However, I know that if I could, there are bloody great swathes of our history I'm actually pretty damn ashamed of.
Care to elaborate at all?
So your obviously proud to be English/British then?
No. My nationality is an accident of birth.
Yes, there's good in our chequered past. However, if I could feel pride in something I had no part in/no influence over, then I can't help think it would be outweighed by the shame I'd feel over the whole "Empire building" stage.
For example, when looking over the Normandy beaches, and walking round the war graves, I feel a deep sense of thankfulness- but not pride.
I deplore the attitude of thinking that the natives should be dragged from their mud huts & "made civilised." Why try to make everyone like us? Why foist upon them all the crap that goes with a "civilised" society?
I'm gabbling as I've just had puncture wounds made behind the knee by a kitten. Anyone got a puncture repair kit? evil

It's one of my must do's- and I'm petrified...but I like being scared biggrin
Ya see, Nelly, that's been my tack.
I don't read the tabloids, so a lot of the "facts" eluded me at the time & still do. The only bare bones I didn't manage to escape was this- there was an allegation, and it never went to court because of a payout.
Now- the payout is undoubtedly highly odd.
By the same token- if I believed my child had been abused, no amount of money would have payed me off.
Ok, theres the possibiity I'd have accepted the payoff and used it to hire a partcularly nasty hit man/woman with a passion for ripping out fingernails with pliers to the tune of "Ben," and a bottle of champagne for after. But you get my drift.
For that reason, I reserve judgement. If I bothered to find out more about the case I might start to feel the balance of probability was tipped- but Joe Public stands no hope of getting to anything close to the facts.
As I've said before, if he was guilty I hope he rots in a hell where "The girl is mine" is played on a loop.
Oh, fgs....can a gal not reveal a bit of a perversion without being mocked. Tch. rolleyes

I'm in two minds if to post or not- my MJ "moment" was a few years back, when I retook my English GCSE at night skewl. One of the speaking & listening tasks was to play a chat show host, or guest, in a pair.
I wrote a skit...in which I was Ali G interviewing Michael Jackson.
It was funny.
It was also ahem "near the knuckle."

Dealing with other peoples problems- especially if it's someone you're close to- is all encompassing. You can't escape them, and feel yourself being dragged down.
It's as though you're a battery- and day by day, bit by bit they sap your positve charge, until the day- and I'm guessing your warning light is on- you realise you're running on empty.
That's the time you really need to make time to recharge. You may have to reject some of their demands- but you'll be doing it in their interests too. If you break down, you're of no use to them.
An absolute god send- and this is bearing in mind I'm the least sporty person I know- was taking up a martial art for me. For an hour and a half, twice a week, I had to give 100% focus to that. It took all of my concentration, and there was no room in my head for anyone, or anything else. I'd leave there feeling emotionally, and mentally, recharged & invigorated.
How about trying something like Tai Chi? I know lots of sane, non tree hugging people who swear by it- and there are Tai Chi classes all over. It could really, really help.
Do the little things that build up into a more "cheery" you. Sing- when you least feel like singing. That'll cheer up not just you, but everyone in earshot. Who can stay sad when they're singing a happy tune?
Failing that- you know where I am. kiss
Laugh a minute me, you can't stay miserable in my company. I'm more cheery than Marvin... rolleyes
I'm an old slagbag. I know this because someone on a 'nilla forum called me it for daring to have an unconventional relationship. The horror!

shoot the cats with a plastic pellet BB gun - doesn't harm them but scares the living daylights out of them and they seldom return for another barrage.
Cat shit can cause blindness in young children - I don't care about their rights, they relinquish any consideration when they shit in my garden!

If it hits the right spot it can cause damage. I've been shot in the arse with a bb gun- and it was easily enough for a cat to lose an eye. The pellet, not the arse. rolleyes
Having had to curtail young kids playing in the garden because of cat unmentionables, I hate it as much as the next person. A water pistol is far less harmful, but just as effective a deterrent.
