For 3 months now we have been trying to find a builder to do a small half day job for us, not the most lucrative of jobs but I would have thought it would make a good filler for someone who may be rained off on their main project.
All we want is an internal door putting in, not even a door, just a square opening knocked through and finished off.
We have tried the local papers, advertised on local/trusted tradesman sites and the response has been totally negative, 1 guy came and took a look at it, booked to do it, phoned to change the date, then never turned up, others have said they would come and look at it but have never turned up.
Seems there is not that much shortage of work about as we are led to believe lol Lord knows how we are going to get the other two small jobs done after that

It can be frustration, thing is (if I were in the trade but am actually taking the 5th)that given a choice of keeping a regular customer happy, even if I were not getting much for it, I would over somebody who I have never done work for before. A half day job does not exist. It may be half a day doing the work but getting the materials, getting to your house and then to get somewhere else makes it unlikely they will be able to do another job that day.
I also find (I am sure this is not true in your case) that the person who wants the job doing does not appreciate what is involved!
Having said all that you should be able to get someone to do it. I have mailed you a little tip to get somebody out to do it.
And for all those sniggering, it's not what you think!

According to the SunMail Guardian and many others British airways is not able to fly the England football team to Brazil for the World Cup.
OK, I get it that the airline itself doesn't get much more than a PR opportunity and that in turn bites into profits and therefore, most likely, all our pensions. I also understand that the FA say's it can't reimburse BA for all it's costs. Business is business and a stalemate has been reached.
One suggestion could be that the Government helps out, but unlike the Northern Ireland Assembly, the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly England doesn't have it's own dedicated Parliament/government. Ours is the UK government and I can also understand why the Scots, Welsh and Irish would not want to pay for the English team to go to the World Cup.
So we are at a bit of an impasse
However I have a solution, let's get the boys in blue on the job, and I don't mean the Police. Stuff British Airways, let's send the England team to the World cup on a Royal Air Force Voyager aircraft, perhaps we could flank it with a couple of Typhoon fighter just to show we mean business?
The RAF helped to beat the Italians before; Maybe it's time to use our service men and women in a role that will endear them to our populace and allow them to show their immense pride and support for our country?

I can't think that this a good use of public money, flying a group of young men who earn more in a week than some people to in a year to what is essentially a commercial event run to turn a profit that the bigger clubs in this country see a distraction from "real" football.
Personally I hope that the Government don't help, the RAF don't get involved nor BA give them a freebe!
You would see how much it means to the players if you asked them to put there hands in there own pockets and stump up the air fair themselves.
From my experience, if you ask a supporter of a major club, would they prefer to see there team win the European cup or England win the world cup? Most say both! but if they had to choose 1 it would be the European money washing around in this country is with the big clubs and the managers know that there job is connected to how well the national side do. They do not send there players off to the world cup with a cheery wave, they just hope they don't get injured.
The way International football is thought of for these top clubs where the majority of the international players come from and the majority of the hundreds of millions of pounds washes around is indifferent at best.
Maybe taking our chance of doing well due to the fact that those with power don't even want us to be there, maybe the FA should approach Ryan Air?
Don't waste your time in summer 2014, we aren't going to win, the players don't care and top clubs don't even want the competition to take place!
There is a vast number of sports played in Britain in the summer, usually played by people who do it because they love it and enjoy winning. If you want the big money sports, well plenty of these as well.
Or go for a walk, put your money behind a local tea shop or pub counter! I guarantee they need it more than the faceless sharks flogging replica shirts.
Don't want to take this off at a tangent but there seems to be growing evidence (not collected by me you understand) that we have water on earth because we have been hit in our history by one or more of these dirty snow balls. If this did happen, it is possible that some of the chemicals within the comet reacted with others on earth and formed the first primitive bacteria....... Which is nice.

Well that is probably the worst post I have ever made and I have done some I regret you all know that.
Just checked the update on Comet Ison
11th December 2013
Sun 1 - Comet 0
The comet didn't even survive the Suns Power until later this month when it would have been safe, it's earliest contact showed that it wasn't the all time threat it could have been, All that reasearch into ICBM with nuclear warheads that could be used to fend off comet attacks should have been put into using the Sun as a shield lol.
So endeth the greatest spectacle the earths inhabitants would ever see and now will not see, RIP Comet Ison you will be remembered by all Astronemers, Scientists and Nerds lol

Bless you for trying! It would more than likely have been cloudy that night anyway.

I answered your question, I said he was convicted what more did you want me to say to the question "was he convicted or not". (1)
Having answered your question I wondered what difference it made (2), in South Africa the people of the nation voted overwhelmingly that it didn't matter and surely that is their business or do we impose our values on other nations ? and if we do my example of that was there for all to see, our example is to call a convicted terrorist (3) The Right Honourable and pay him a large salary.
My tangents have been to show that what people do in their life is only relevant at the time, I have given examples of others who have done things they should not have done but whose overall deeds have been accepted by the British Public who have totally exonerated them, why are people choosing to highlight what Nelson Mandella did ?
People are being very selective on who does wrong and it is alright and who does wrong and it is wrong.(4)

(1) A simple yes or no answer is all that was required, not another tangent.
(2) It doesn't matter at all in my opinion. You don't believe he did anything wrong, fine that's your business.
(3) I thought you said terrorists didn't exist?
(4) I'm not being selective between right and wrong. I let the Law courts decide. Even if that makes me a Nazi in your opinion.
Do you think he split opinion?

Yes this is just about getting rid of the useless bit of paper. We just need to follow Australia's lead now and start to challenge the whole concept of green/ carbon related taxes.

Ooop's, thought I hadn't heard anything about a tax being abolished! I feel ashamed of myself and will beat myself with a with a wet fish later.
But notwithstanding all the good he did for the world, history still shows he was convicted wink
As too was Gandhi and quite a few others. If I were a brilliant student who had done all they could to better myself but to be thwarted only by the colour of my skin. To then look around me and find that skin colour held back the vast majority of people in my country by the fact that in a so called democracy I nor anybody born with my skin colour could not vote, it might just dawn on me that it is unjust.
Although I doubt I would have the courage, I like to think I would be moved to do something about it.
Once released from Robin Island and included in the political system he then showed he was a healer by including those who had tried to silence him. I wish I could agree with Jed but I think history is written by the victors. If I am correct then ours maybe the generation who remember it as it was with some element of reality. Not from being there or being the oppressed but from a a was generally the west that benefited (other than the ruthless dictatorial South African government of the time) from importing cheap fruit, car parts, wine to exporting weapons, military know how and other goods designed to keep the status quo.
It was sanctions that eventually brought the white rulers to there knees, sanctions that the UK were very reluctant to implement. Can't think why?
Terrorist or freedom fighter? No prize for guessing my view! South Africa may now or may never be a paradise, it may even become a very dangerous place but at least the majority of it's people who will decide.
Thank you Mr Mandela and rest in piece.
It's just another tax to try and balance the books and to be honest I see it as an inconvenience rather than an extortion racket. If we loose the VED, the tax would have to be collected somewhere else.
If you put it on fuel I guess the hauliers would have a justifiable moan, alcohol and tobacco are taxed within an inch of becoming luxury goods. So what does that leave? Sweets and sunshine?
The smaller engined car you get the lower the VED. Some vehicles are rated at zero so whilst it may not have funded road building since the 1940's it does go into the tax pot.

1st December, I can now shop in stores playing Xmas music. And the Xmas films can now start. Starting with Elf tonight and working up to Miracle on 34th Street and Its a Wonderful Life. Any favourite Xmas films ?

It's a wonderful life has to be my fave! They did a Nicolas Cage one on a similar theme in the 90's which was surprisingly good too.
I actually prefer the old romantics over Christmas like The African Queen and in my view the romcom all other romcom's should mark them selves against, The Apartment.
I will also be looking out for
Towering inferno
Wizard of Oz
Where Eagles Dare
Any Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd.
Basically any film I remember watching as a kid at Christmas when it was still magical to me.
The Pokermon movies
Harry Potter
Jurassic Park
and basically any film my kids watched at Christmas when they were kids and it was still magical.
Now as a cynical old sceptic, my heart still melts and Christmas actually starts with Carols from Kings College on Christmas Eve afternoon.
He = bi, first erotic dreams involved guys! in truth has had more male lovers the female.
She = straight, just doesn't do it for her. Never has, never will.
So suppose the answer is that it hasn't changed us in that regard.
We don't mind the odd unsolicited whisper, if someone has been following the conversation in the chat room, has obviously read our profile and whispered something related to either then fine.
We don't reply to the "hi, I live down the road from you, do you want to meet?" ones and if we are engrossed in conversation in the room will politely say "in the room please"
But to get back to the original question, everybody is different! we do find that the socials are very good as it will give others a chance to get to know you.
In the chat room, if you go on at about the same time of day most times you chat, you will probably find yourself joining in and developing friendships quite naturally anyway.

Personally I don't think the amount we have sent/pledged/spent at this time to aid the people of the disaster is anywhere near enough.
We have funds held in accounts specifically for this purpose, our aid fund is there to give aid around the world when needed, it's use at this time will have no effect on the UK economy.
These "foreigners" need our help and should get it.
I also doubt that the report I heard on Channel 4 News was the result of FB or Twitter, I am still more inclined to believe it was an error by an individual or individuals at Channel 4.
I don't doubt that some would then use that error to their own needs and for racist gain.

First I have heard of it but probably something as simple as a stuck Autocue.
Each to there own but we don't have an age, sexual orientation or gender criteria. Personality is the thing for us so what it says in the profile is far more relevant than the age.

yes, i know i drink too much, but i spend many hours in a gym and my health is good. my helath check confirms this.
but....................
be honest, today we had two bottles of wine (one with the meal, the other a little later throughout the evening) a small (ish) baileys and a small (ish) islay malt whisky.
the doctor, who we know well, says that ok, due to our lifestyle, that's ok. but do we regret what we drink?
how may units a week folks, and be honest!

Does your doctor friend have magic eye site that can look at the condition of your internal organs? Hope you don't jump in your car the following morning either! Neither of us drink so can't comment on how it makes you feel but looking at the list above, if you don't feel effects afterwards I would suggest it is a very dangerous amount.
Is it a habit for you? do you think that if you get to a certain time of day or after a specific task or when you are stressed you deserve a drink? If the answer is yes then you maybe on the edge of dependency.
In another thread you calculated the cost of smoking, we don't smoke either but the list above looks as if it is at least twice as expensive than a packet of fags!
So I would say the answer is yes, far too much, morbidly too much.
2 bottles of wine a baileys and a whisky between 2! try cutting down, you wont see the problems coming, they will just hit you!

Why do people drink to excess ? from one who has never been drunk in his life.
Have you ever been drunk ? do you know how stupid people look and act when they are drunk, have you seen how aggressive some drunks become, have you seen the cost of alcohol abuse on the NHS ? do you know what you could buy with the money people spend on alcohol, I last had a drink in August, mmmmm what a cool saving I have made towards my Mercedes and holiday.
Smoking is legal, I choose to do it, being drunk in a public place is illegal, go preach to those breaking the law.

Damn! I actually agree with one of the alleged godlike's. So much for my rebel qualifications.
Exactly, why shouldn't you smoke? it is legal and smokers are not second class citizens. Don't understand why people think smokers should not have the same access to the NHS as others, yes it's a life style choice but so is playing rugby or squash and we don't object to them being patched up.
A lot of people do want to give up though Mids, when they do it can be very difficult and Fobs, hardly a brand new cutting edge ad is it?
I go into a lot of elderly peoples homes with my job (not in a criminal way)and so many ask me if I mind if they smoke? It's there home and how can I say I mind?
PS, I don't drink and am well known for driving very slowly, I do like a pie though, perhaps I should not eat them in public places? perhaps I should be more aware of people inhaling second hand blackberry and apple.

I'm sorry but I fail to see how you can compare a care home and Asda.
If you choose to shop in Asda then you have exercised your free will and rights. You are made aware by signage that you will be filmed during your visit and you accept that as part of everyday life in a commercial outlet.
Using camera's in care homes is a flagrant disregard for the privacy and rights of the people for whom the building is their home. There can be no comparison betwixt a persons house and a public commercial outlet.

You obviously don't shop at my local Asda where people use it as an extension of there home, yelling at there kids and standing outside the door having a fag!
Wish we had a Trago Mills.
Quick owl update, according to my eye-spy book of birds it is a Tawny Owl, according to my neighbour it means I have mice in my shed!(won't be going in there for a sly ciggy for sure)
I am someone who has not smoked for 15 years, I never intend to smoke again but I do not consider myself an ex smoker, more a smoker that doesn't.
It is not just a habit but an addiction, one that the lead singer of Arrowsmith once said was harder to give up than hard drugs and booze.
So it's not a case of why do people smoke, more a case of why did they start. Most smokers want to give up, if it was easy they would. When I was smoking I thought the worse thing was (what I perceived at the time)sanctimonious, holly do gooders who wrapped there prejudice up in the statement "but I don't understand why!" Only since my last fag (well last fag in the smoking sense) can I see why never smokers can't understand. There is no incentive in saying "price of a car" none at all. The body craves the nicotine and the next one will be the last, but it isn't. It takes will power and support and in my case a few trial runs (failed attempts) on the way.
PS. As I am writing this an owl has just landed on my shed, utterly stunning not sure what type but it has very feathery legs, sorry got to go take a closer look.
I am sure the vast majority of care workers are dedicated individuals who strive to give the people in their charge the best possible care within the limitations of time and budget. I am equally sure that some go beyond what is called of them and they are more than willing to do this as they see it as a vocation rather than just another job.
Unfortunately (as in virtually all other walks of life) there is a small number of people who abuse their position, whether it be the care home owners or managers who just think of it as an accounting exercise and the product (vulnerable people) is there to maximise profit or to keep costs down or the staff who are either lazy, sadistic, selfish or a mixture of all 3 it is a small minority. It is beyond my comprehension that (all be it a small number) people can be so disrespectful.
I don’t see that CCTV is the answer though, it doesn’t seem right to me that people should have their private life invaded like that. I know that it is said that it would be in the communal areas but even in communal areas, it is their home.
I don’t like disagreeing with someone if I don’t have an alternative suggestion but on this one I don’t. I just think that the dignity of people will be compromised in an effort to stop them being abused. It’s not just the elderly either! Mentally and physically handicapped, orphans, the list goes on.

Ancient Chinese proverb.....
Judging a person does not define them.... It defines you

I bet the Ancient Chinese didn't say half the clever proverb's they are credited with..... they can't have been that bloody smug surely?
After all, what have the ancient Chinese ever done for us?
I can feel a new thread coming on!
I know nobody likes a smart arse but!
A hell of a lot of what we call "traditional British fayre" is continental. The humble spud is from the Americas (find and listen to Bob Newhart's nutty Wal sketch on you tube)and it was the Spanish Jews who first battered and fried fish in the East End after being forced to leave during the inquisition. Turkey? American. Rabbit? Romans, even the humble nettle was introduced by the Romans to make though was mainly what grew locally until the arrival of the railways in the 1800's (I remember it well) and then not to the masses until after the 2nd world what we may see as foreign now maybe considered as traditional to the next generation.
I am afraid that I am a little predictable considering my Scandinavian ancestors, anything from anywhere as long as it has fish in it. From Sushi to dried and salted you haven't tried dried cod in a sea weed wrap you can't believe how tasty it is.

Quote by MidsCouple24
Yes, herts.
Those wilth longer memories will remember the use of chemical weapons by the USA in living memory so it seems a bit rich that they are all for war war with Syria.
The UK doesn't escape such attention either as they have blood on their hands too.

I don't get your point ? The UK has committed atrocities for centuries, my love of Churchill is also in the knowledge that had his tactics of carpet bombing civilian targets and civilians been viewed in the present he would have been tried and convicted of war crimes.
Almost every nation on earth has committed atrocities in their past, even the Swiss Army butchered civilians when they were hired by France to fight the uprising there (the French Revolution).
I think we are meant to learn from what we do, improve, change, make the world a better place and prevent others from making the same mistakes we did.
It can take a while, chemical warfare has been used since the 11th century (perhaps earlier) when diseased cattle were catapulted over city walls during a siege to contaminate the population.
So the fact that we did it not only means that we are right to tell others they shouldn't but also means we are indeed learning.
Yes the US used chemical weapons in Vietnam, we used it in WWI both in living memory, good that in that same living memory we can see us learning from our mistakes.
If we don't learn from our mistakes as a nation what hope is there to learn from our mistakes as individuals.

I agree, if you look at how things went in Suez, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq then surely the lesson is butt out, nothing to do with us, we will only make things worse.
We have very sophisticated ways of waging war but do not have the will to examine before hand the effect it will have on the hearts and minds of those left to pick up the pieces once we have gone.
The innocent are still being made to leave there homes, being killed and abused, by all sides. It does seem inviting to lob a few missiles over there and that will be that. It wont be if we look at recent history.
The best thing we can do is offer aid and shelter to those who need it and as things are going, support to the Russian effort.
I agree that it is easy (and possibly wrong)to condemn past acts when we can only view them through 21st century eyes but even now we can only ever view events through Western eyes. Our culture, democracy and freedoms are rightly cherished. Does that give us the right to try and transplant them to other parts of the world? We were the ones who carved up the region in the first place making false borders so we could plunder the area. This took no account of existing tribal boundaries.

wtf this todo with sw

in adult speech I think this translates as "what the fuck is this post to do with swinging"
And the answer is bugger all, if you want swinging/sex posts you go to the other forum subjects "lets talk about sex", "dogging", "lets meet up" or go to the chat rooms or send numerous mails out to others hoping you'll get a response.
The "fancy a chat" is the area for generally "vanilla" discussions covering any subject anyone wants to raise. I will admit quite a few of the discussions are political however the view points are generally interesting until some of the more mature members start bickering. I think of the "fancy a chat" forum as the equivalent of sitting in the pub nattering with your friends.
After all, nobody involved in the swinging scene has a point of view about anything other than swinging do they?
We don't read the newspapers, we don't watch the news, formulate opinions on any other subject other than swinging!
When we sit at home, the only thing we think about is swinging. We don't have jobs because we are too busy swinging. We only cut the grass when we know we are entertaining swingers in the garden.
In fact, if you have any other thought than swinging, whether it be on sport, fashion, politics, music, art, rural affairs then how dare you even think of calling yourself a swinger. Cancel your subscription at once go and be a rounded individual!

Stoptober
Id like to ask if anyone else is trying to stop smoking with the help of the Stoptober Campaign. Id really like to give up and i know its easier if others are giving up at the same time and supporting each other through the cravings and all that malarkey.

Good luck Kat! it's not easy but then neither are most worth while things. Believe me, 10 years down the line it is worth while!
It maybe a dangerous job, but it's no more dangerous than when they took the job. Nobody forced them at gun point and why is it different to other forms of manual labour? farm labourers, machinists all get older and all work with equipment that can kill either them or others. It may seem unfair and I don't disagree but if you want to pay more in tax then the state might be able to afford for firemen to retire and have full pension, if you don't then don't moan!
Don't blame this government alone for this situation, or the last one but every government since the end of the second world war who have fuelled expectations beyond there power to deliver. If we want better public services and the ability for those being paid for by the state to have a nice life whilst serving the public and after they have retired (early) then put 10 pence more tax on every pound you earn! not a vote winner! If you don't and it seems unfair then you are fooling yourself.
Perhaps we could start raiding neighbouring countries and steeling there treasures to sell on the open market to pay for better public services? but please wake up and smell the coffee, no government for over 60 years that has promised jam tomorrow has ever, ever delivered! quite simply, they can't, it's not in there power, it's in ours, we make your choice and vote accordingly.
In recent history ;- Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Rwanda, the Balkans.
Factions fighting largely innocent people with the sole aim of eliminating all opposition to there view.
Thankfully we live in a (now) peaceful corner of the world but our own history is full of similar events. I don't think I will ever become de-sensitised to the horrendous events that humanity seems to inflict with ease on it's own kind. Maybe it is within us all to undertake such repulsive acts?
I would not block it out of my life though! If we are also capable of great acts of kindness then we may have to help those who have been effected with shelter and medicines. Every innocent life that is taken has a knock on effect to there loved ones. It may not be correct to say watch, listen and pray for them but to have them in our thoughts costs nothing.
