At some point people are going to have to take responsibility for their own shortcomings. Many people have taken on huge morgages that they can not afford to pay back. As a tax payer I would rather my hard earned cash was spent on education and hospitals etc rather than digging people out of a mess that they got themselves into.
If people loose their homes the council may have a duty to rehouse them, but they may not. It would depend on indevidual circumstances. Even if the council rehoused them it doesn't mean to say they would get their rent and council tax paid either, again that would depend on their personal ]
Where are they ever going to rehouse them?
Most people going into privately rented accomodation with private landlords who change more that what they were paying on morgages.
But I suppose if you see it another way we can them give up or jobs and then the government would have to foot the bill.
Would it be better to help people keep hold of their homes for stability for their children?
I am not saying hand outs it would be support that gets paid back at a later stage.
Does it seem fair that people in private rented or counsil housing get help if they hit hard times.
But people that buy because they had no other choices and work and pay taxes get nothing?
We used to get help with the interest payments years ago but even that isnt an option now.

Minx, I can only speak for Bristol City Council because that is where I live and that is where I have had dealings. The council do not have a duty to rehouse everybody who is classed as homeless, it depends on various circumstances and until you are in the situation you don't know what kind of help you could be entitled to
I agree in an ideal world it would be lovely to help everyone in trouble to keep their own homes, but it is open to abuse as is any type of benefit system.
Banks and people have been acting irresponsibly for years, the banks lending to much, people borrowing to much. Everyone wether in rented homes, council homes or morgaged homes are feeling the pinch. The answer I really dunno.

i agree ... i just couldnt put it in words aswell as you smile
Ah but... people's circumstances change. Wage earners lose jobs, split up, die...
Peoples circumstances do change, hence why I wrote assistance from the government with regards to housing and benefits would depend on individual circumstances.
Minx, my guess would be that most of the people struggling to pay their morgages are going to be the ones who got morgages based on 4/5times their salary over the maximum term. Should they not have to take some responsibility for getting themselves in over their heads?.

Best developments in order : contraception, antibiotics, plumbing/clean water. Now lets see if we can spread these well established western 'luxuries' into the parts of the world who still find themselves in the dark ages.
On a lighter note - the biggest change I have seen is in communication. A colleague is about to move to Oz with his partner. 100 years ago his adult children would expect maybe 2 letters a year (assuming they could read) and to possibly never see their father again. Now, they may be in daily contact, face to face (almost) and live-voiced via web-cam and . Text messages and phone calls and e-mails with photo attachments. When you think about it - what we can do now to communicate compared to when our grandparents were born is totally, utterly FABULOUS.

Got to agree with you, my step sister and family moved to Oz in April this year and I think it is amazing how we can cumunicate when there are thousands of mile between us.
As a working mum of two who is also studying I could never honestly give 100% to everything I do as much as I would like to.

In respect of the race issue, I think it is worth remembering that when Barack Obama was born, African Americans didn't have the right to vote. He has risen to the highest polictical office in his country within 50 years of the civil rights struggle.
I write this as a white person who has lived in the American South and who has spent many years studying the history and politics of America and, in particular, slavery and its impact.
It is historic. It is momentous. And it is incredibly moving. For a people who had for so long been disenfranchised, this election will prove an inspiration.
I received a text message from a friend of mine in Louisiana and then funnily enough I got two more copies of the same message from friends in this country.
It read:
Evers, the first martyr, gave us fortitude.
Rosa sat so Martin could march.
Martin marched so Obama could run.
Obama won so our children can fly.
It moved me to tears when I received it within hours of the result being announced.
Google Medgar Evers, Rosa Parks. Look at the dates of when they were making their lasting impact on the civil rights struggle. Think about MLK and when he was standing on the steps telling the world about his dream.
Then think about the impact it has on people who previously always wondered about the unspoken institutionalised glass ceiling that many feared still existed despite gaining voting and other civil rights only 40-something years ago.
It does mean a lot to people and the significance of having a black First Family in the White House is hugely symbolic.
There are parents who really are now saying with real conviction to their children, "You can do it! You can fly."
And from a personal perspective, I'm just pleased that the man can string a sentence together and deliver a speech - much easier on the ear! wink

Personally I can't think of a better way to spend your tax credits. You get to enjoy your purchases time and time again and at the expense of the tax man... perfick!
Freckledbird you look well sexy in your avatar :rascal:
I was about 13 out at a party with my sister and her older friends. Drank more cider and black than I care to remember and I spent the main part of the evening in the ladies toilets with my sister holding my hair back....
You would think 13 years on I would have learned my lesson but no, I still drink more than is good for me and spend the rest of the next day paying for it!!

we have got children in need coming up again soon and while this event raises millions of pounds for children so much of it goes out of this country to children abroad

Sorry to snip your post but I just wanted to comment on this part.
I'm pretty sure and I have just check the children in need webpage and the money raised stays in the uk. Its red nose day (comic relief) that sends a portion of money raised to other countries.
I don't have a problem with helping foreign charities, what I do have a problem with is sending money to a country when corrupt politicions are going to take the most of it. As a nation we have sent billions of cash to Africa and but it has hardly made a dent. Some of the impoverished countries governments need to help themselves a little more!.
I would love to visit Austraila and New Zealand and travel around in a camper van thingie with Mr Lyns!.
My first was a H reg light blue fiesta, I loved it, would probably still have it now if some bastard hadn't stolen it and broken it. I was so upset I couldn't even bring myself to go and inspect the damage!.
Shame the kids don't realise they are suppost to sleep for an extra hour! awake at 5:45 on a Sun morn ffs whats that all about!.
Hair straightners. How did us frizzy hair types cope without them dunno
If we are in the bedroom then its lights off but if we are downstairs then its low lighting....
I quite often wake in the middle of the night for some fun!
Children should have a right to voice their opinions, and they should have human rights however alot of children know what rights they have and how to manipulate them.
I would be horrified if my child was badly behaved at school but I would be equally horrified if a teacher man handled my child. It has happened to my little one for no apparent reason, in front of me. I did complain to the school and it was dealt with accordingly.
