In answer to Sassy's post (and you know I like you as a person Sassy, we've had many a giggle in the chat room so this isn't personal ok).
Sorry Sassy hon, I'm not having a go at you at all, your posts have been eloquent and well thought out and you have made some very valid points

Wishy I didn't take it personally or as you having a go, I enjoyed the debate and on this particular issue have a wealth of experience to back up my views. I am still convinced your wrong tho! lol
I really do not want this to descend into a slanging match, however I again feel the need to respond to what has been said. I believe we all the right to our opinions, however I also reserve the right to try and change oyur mind If I think you are wrong. Without this none of us would have any rights at al, as we simply would have accepted 'our lot' so to speak.
Lets start with Gay Christians. No, (well if you even believe in him - I don't), Jesus did not hava special pink loin cloth, and what is the point of that comment, may I ask? The reason there is a specific gay christian movement is because of the teachings of and indeed the history of the church, (pick a church, almost any church), has been and remains homophobic. Why chooce your religion and then go to practice somewhere where you cannot be yourself, have to hide who you are and listen to sermons and rants about the ungodliness of gays. If you sincerely believe, as many christians do, that god loves us all, and you want to practice your faith, well then of course you set up your own, that not only gay people but also more tolerant and accepting christians also go to.
I think that some people here do not fundamentally understand the concept of oppression and how this differ from discrimination, and what the significance is. Oppression is something which is inherent in everyday society, has been there throughout history, is still here now, and is not simply to do with actual rights and legislation but also to do with attitudes and peoples place in society. Women have faces oppression as women - called sexism, LGB people have faced oppression as a result of their sexuality and Black and ethnic minority people have faced oppression as a result of their race/colour of their skin - called racism.
If you accpet this view point, and I do, then men canot face sexism, white people cannot face racism and straight people cannot face oppression with regards to sexuality. Now I don't mean that these people cannot be discriminated against and for those reasons, they of course can, but this is not oprression, this is discrimination - why - because it is not something which is absolutely inherent in society, for the most part these groups are the norm, the majority, hold the power balance within society, do not face day in day challenges only as a result of their sexuality/ethnicity/gender. They are not subject to stereotyping, do not face lesser treatment under law and haven't done either, do not face institutionalised, (ie it goes through every level of society from the police, to the media, to education, the workplace etc ) racism, sexism or homophobia - I hope this makes some sense, but if not I would be happy to meet and discuss this in person, as it rather a complex theory.
You talk about black people and self segregation - don't be absurd! Black poeple have not sought to segregate themselves from society, however it has taken many many years for them to gain any semblance of equal right under the law in this country, and even with those laws in place they are not equal. Still worse off in education, more likely to be stopped by the police, still targeted by groups such as BNP, still subject to attack, a young man was killed not so long ago in Liverpool you may remember - his crime - the colour of his skin! Talking about legal right is all well and good, but if there is not the mechanisms in place to enfoce these legal rights then they are no good to anyone. If the institutions that enforce these laws are themselves racist etc, then are they realy doing an effective job, and did it ever occur to you that legal equality does not give you eqal standing within society, not until every barrier has been smashed away, when we look at each other and see each other and not a skin colour / a sexuality etc then, legal equality isn't quite franky worth the paper it's written on!
There have been equal rights laws around gender and race since the 1970's - but are seriously trying to tell me that women and ethnic monorities are equal! Thats bull! Women still earn 2/3's of what men earn, still earn less for doing the same job, still face violence, a woman is sexually assualted something like avery two minutes in this country, women who press charges for /assualt are still subject to ideas of did she ask for it - what was she wearing etc, women are still under-represented in all institutions of society - law, workplace, parliament, judiciary, police etc. Black people and those from other ethnic minorities still face attack, prejudice, have to move from areas for fear of their lives, face horrific experiences in the workplace, are under-represented in all institutions etc - and they have had legal equality for years! Legal equality doesn't give you anything unless there are ways to enforce, and even then, I don't want something that is given and can be taken awat again, I want to see a societal change, where the legal is nothing but a back-up just in case!
If caucasian people demanded a special day there would be outrage - quite rightly so! I am caucasian and gave never been oppressed as a reslut of the colour of my skin! Yes I've had comments etc, but day in day out the majority of people I see are the same colour as me, on tv, in magazines, etc as it was very eloquently put by rodger - everyday is caucasian day, and so for the same reasons we don't need a special day for caucasian people, niether do we for heterosexuals or for men.
As a veteran equal rights campaigner, I would like to point out I have never asked for more than was my due! We don't want extra rights, we wanted the same rights, and once we have those, then we'll work on setling into society and taking our place alongside the rest of you, without fear, without intolerance and without discrimination. I am not settling for second best, I want the same rights, I don't want to not be attacked for my sexuality becasue a law says you can't, but because everyone recognises quite simply that its wrong! That is no more and no less than a heterosexual male or famale has, not just about the law but about society and attitudes.
By the way, incase your interested, the laws regarding a whole host of sexuality issues are extremely new, as I said about race and gender legislation - it came in in the 70's and we're still not there yet with regards to that, what makes you think legislation which has been in a for a few years will make huge difference straight away.
You say that "sexual orientation is not something that should confer special status upon a specific group of people as it then becomes detrimental to other people who don't belong to that dempgraphic section of society"
I never wanted, nor asked for special status. In all my campigning years, when I've marched and rallied, and met with ministers, and sent post cards and visited MP's, when I've been attacked when I've led and when I've followed, I have never once asked for more than was my due, and if you see that as being detrimental to other sections of society then so be it! But I would say one thing, as a campaigner, I was never going to settle for merely equality, I wanted and still want more for everybody! I don't want to be equal with men to earnm a shit wage in the same job, so I join with them and work to get an equal but higher wage for all, for example.
You say you 'don't give a shit' - well I do, and have dedicated my time, my life to chnaging this world, and ideas such as these in this thread do not help, but must be challenged, It won't be first time I hear then and it won't be the last! You did say that many women did sacrifice themselves and you respect that - did it never occur to you that so many of us still do, in one way or another - granted I've never thrown myself under a horse to propagate the equal rights agenda, but for me, my place in Pride is a liitle like that, as is it for the hundreds of thousands of lgb people who have a day where they can be out and simply be themselves!
Well another huge rant, and I'm sorry for it, but I will keep on posting as long as the views I don't agree keep appearing! That is afterall, my right!

There is however a great deal of research (and if you are interested i can point you in its direction) to suggest that the genetic make up of an individual can direct sexual orientation.

Oooooooooooooh, let's talk biology lol lol lol
In the early 1990s, two biological studies of homosexuality drew wide media and scientific interest. First, Dr. Simon LeVey published research in the journal Science on differences in the hypothalami of homosexual and heterosexual men.... His conclusion was that the hypothalamus of gay men were more like that of women, and he reasoned that the part of the hypothalamus he measured was responsible for attraction to a certain sex. However, his paper was criticised heavily for its tiny sample size, the fact that he used the brains of dead people (obviously  ) --- some of whom he just guessed were straight cos nothing in their medical notes suggested otherwise confused . As far as I know, his results have not been replicated.
Then, Prof. Dean Hamer released a study in which he correlated homosexuality with a genetic marker on the X chromosome. Again, this paper took a lot of flak though I've never actually been bothered to read the original rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes
Animal studies have also been conducted in attempts to show that sexuality is biological. I have serious problems with such studies when researchers attempt to draw comparisons with human sexuality however, as studies on animals such as rats do not come close to touching on the complexities of human nature.
Even if there are differences in the biological make-up of gay verses straight people, it does not mean that individuals with a certain type of genetic or neurological make up will ever act on their impulses. Many people live a lie all their lives due to fear, social conditioning, or worse. Homosexuality was once punishable by death in the UK. (it still in in some countries). We may struggle with our sexual identities nowadays, and many of us still deny ourselves sexual freedom, but it is nothing compared to the struggles that some people have gone through in the past............... does anyone know what the pink triangle represents, for example?
I choose my lifetsyle cos I am allowed that freedom. I once wore a pink triangle ear-stud and a rainbow flag badge cos I was proud to be free. I now wear the SH pin for the same reason.
Long live sexual freedom and all that sail in her lol lol lol lol
I know, I know! It represents the markings that 'gay' prisoners in nazi concentration camps were made to wear, and which have since been reclaimed as a symbol of Pride by the LGBT community.
Hmmmm feel another rant on sexuality coming on, but I'll resist! IMHO, the idea that men are gay beacuse they just are but that woman can choose, is quite simply bollox!
The only choosing that LGBT people do with regards to their sexuality is wether to acknowledge it or not, whether to actually have physical relations with someone of the same gender and whether to tell others about their preferences. We do not choose whether to be 'lesbian, gay or bi' that is just simply who we are. I never chose my sexuality, it just was, I did however choose to acknowledge it and to enact upon it.
If I had never had sex with another woman, I would still be bi, if a gay man never has sex with a man, he is till gay and if a lesbian never has sex with another woman she is still a lesbian! Why, because sexuality is about and is determined by who we desire and attraction, not the physical manifestation of that attraction. So for example, a nun who has never had sex with anyone ever could still be a lesbian, because of who she desires / is attracted to.
As someone with years of experience of working with young people coming to terms with their sexuality and giving advice and guidance on coming out, I have never noticed any difference between the boys and the girls. The boys come in and say I'm gay/bi and we deal with it, and the girls come in and say I'm a lesbian/bi and we deal with it! They never come in say I may be lesbian/bi but its my choice to be, and I think I will be / won't be! That is quite simply ridiculous! People either are or there not, simple as that. The choice is whether to acknowledge it, do anything about it and whether we have the ability to even discover it, are we open to the discovery or do we absolutely suppress or feelings.
Blue/JucyLucy, can I join you in discussion / exploration, ....................just in case I'm not sure you understand, the experience will probably be so good I'll make up my mind once and for all whether I am or I'm not! lol
Ok only just seen the stuff about 'gay' celebrations, but felt I absolutely have to comment, so sorry if it's been said before, but this has upset and angered me, particularly as I don't think it has come from a homophobic point of view but rather from a lack of understanding regarding LGBT issues.
I should perhaps point out that I am an 'out' woman, I am a bisexual woman who lives a lesbian lifestyle, has had lesbian relationships/lovers (far more so than with men), I am fomer equalities officer, work/have worked with young lgbt people and work on the gay scene in one of the biggest venues in the UK.
I am 'out' to everybody, friends, family, work colleagues etc. Why is this important for me? For many people, me included, the process of discovering and coming to terms with your sexuality is/was extremely difficult and complex, analysing these feeling you have, deciding what, if anything to do about it, who to tell etc, and more often than not with the idea that this is not 'normal'! For me, coming out was about being honest about who I was, no more, no less! I simply couldn't live a lie anymore.
Think about the society we live in, how many positive images of lesbians and gay men, or indeed bisexual or trans people do we see? Where are they? A few on tv, usually in some salacious storyline, occassionally in the press and again usually not in a positive way. Think about advertising, media, education, the workplace, think about the whole of the world we live in and what we see, what is 'considered normal' - men and women with their 2.4 kids!
Now I am not knocking that, hey my parents were straight, however when you grow up and all you see and hear is heterosexual society, when the idea that you'll get married, wear a white dress, havce a husband who loves you and have chidren, is propagated time and time again, when most lgbt people are hidden from the mainstream, it is so difficult for people to discover and come to terms with their sexuality when it is not heterosexual.
So they think they may be LGBT, what do they do? Tell their family - many people still face horrific reactions from their family, tell your friends - people still get cut off from their friends, tell your colleagues- people get bullied in the workplace! Oh, I forgot, they don't need to tell anyone do they, they should hide who they are maybe?
Wrong! Until we live in a society where we are all equal, not just under law but in societies attitude, I absolutely applaud those who feel the need to and have to courage to 'come out'! Why should I hide who I am, why shouldn't I walk down the street with my girlfriend without abuse or some stupid fuckwit saying, ooo can I watch! Why should my gay mates have to lie to parents about who they are dating, about who they love! why is it such a big issue! We as lgbt people don't cause the issues, we find a way to live with them! And thats what Pride is about!
Please note that title, PRIDE! Proud of who we are, proud of living my life and not a lie, proud of my girlfriend/boyfirend, proud to answer quesions when asked who I'm dating/who my partner is, etc! Pride means living our lives as lgbt people without lies, without hiding, openly! It doesn't celebrate being gay, it celebrates having pride in your choice to live you life without lies despite the difficulties we still face from society!
Of course the physical acts are private, however that is not all that sexuality about! Until there comes a time when your heterosexuality is not assumed, and not being heterosexual doesn't make you different, when you don't need to 'come out', then we need pride and we need people to live 'out' lifestyles and provide role models and examples to others.
Until gay people don't get beaten in the street, spat upon, bullied at work, disowned by their families, then we need Pride events.
Until its no longer the case that 1 in 10 young lgbt people try self harm / commit suicide, that over 50% of young lgbt people have experienced homophobic bullying from peers, and until sexuality is talked about and accepted in schools, we need Pride
Until I can walk hand in hand down the street with my partner without comment we need Pride!
Until I can have children and them not get bullied or teased because of who I love, until my gay male mates can have children without people assuming they are going to abuse them, then we need Pride!
Until words like, shirtlifter, nancy boy, faggot, poof, queer, lezza, , etc. are eradicated or used by the gay community ourselves and not used as insults, we need Pride!
Until young men like Matthew Sheperd aren't murdered in homophobic attacks , and two young boys aren't put to death for being gay, until people are no longer tortured, imprisoned and put to death in so many countries around the world, we need Pride
and until I and everyone else like me can simply be ourselves, without prejudice, intolerance or fear, then I will carry on flying my flag, carrying my banner, blowing my whistle, celebrating Pride and challenging bigoted and misguided viewpoints!
Sorry for rant, but it had to be said! (And this was restraining myself!)
