i agree entirely with you steph in a family pub there should be segregation but the new law don't work ..if we go out for a meal with the kids and we want a smoke we go to the public bar not sit at the table....that's not what the law says though...the law as it stands will only cause disharmony the only way forward as i can see is if you want a meal in a pub, smoke in the bar. as for restaurants that's a different matter i personally would not light up in a restaurant were other diners have come out specifically for a meal and i do agree that a smoking ban would work in that situation .but a pub is primarily a place were people (adults ) go for a drink and the crack in my own opinion the law has been rushed through with no thought as to the consequences
ps
steph next time i meet you i am going to actually talk to you ...you sound like an intelligent woman

This comes down very brutally to fact - smoking kills not just the smoker but INNOCENT people (adults and Children) who do not smoke but inhale the crap given off by smokers who do not give a damn. This is a proven fact.
Would any smoker not feel guilty if their loved ones who DO NOT smoke contract Lung Cancer from smoke inhalation. There is no catch 22 when it is put like that. You could be the cause of a loved one being made very ill or even killing them.
I truly support a ban to prevent kids and innocent people who choose not to kill themselves through smoking having to cope with Cancer and death through no fault of their own.
Sorry if that offends but it is reality and my own opinion.
Steph mad

steph don't get wound up babe if that's your opinion that's fine ...my opinion is different..what i am trying to say is we all have rights in this country and we can express them.....at the moment the law is a farce..we have to find a compromise that we can all live with but this new law doesn't do it....yes have separate smoking areas and i agree if you don't want to eat with smokers you should not have to and as for kids they should not be in pubs in the first place ...as for smoking at home ...that's another debate for somewhere else ....the upshot is 70% of pub profits come from wet sales and 30% from food so if the law comes in and you were a landlord which would you drop ???? it will end up a lot of pubs closing and a lot more dropping food so we will not be able to get a decent meal and a drink in the same premises....yes there is a risk of harm being in the same room as a smoker but they are far outweighed by crossing the road to get to the pub in the first place...life is a matter of risk assessment and if we didn't take risk it would be boring (sorry rambling) ...its time we all decided what we want....no we will never get it but we may with compromise get somewhere close

Sorry, but as a none smoker, a total ban on smoking in public places is the only way to go in my opinion. Afterall, who wants to go into a pub to eat a meal and have the awful smell and hanging in the air of cigarette smoke?

Me I enjoy a cigarette or a cigar with my coffee after a meal..so what gives anyone the right to tell me i am wrong ..I am pursuing a perfectly legal (for now) pass time...personally i cant stand people chewing gum but its legal and i have no right to put my oar in so i will shut the f**k up and not lecture people about the error of there ways
rant over
I have the right not to breath in dangerous chemicals......surely that right..the right to live comes well above any other consideration. I would like to go home and wake up in morning NOT with all my clothes and hair smelling like an ashtray. Smoking should be banned in all public places, and like any other workplace, there will be zones outside, where if you want to go and smoke you can. remember that by last years figures, only 20% of the population now smoke. Why should the 80% have to put up with the effects brought about by the few. Just save yourself some money and pack it in.
you have the right not to breath other peoples smoke but we have the right to smoke ....bit of a catch 22...lets say this will never be agreed on by both sides of the debate. the differential between the two positions is just far too great..personally i try to smoke considerately and do concede some don't..the biggest problem i can see is that smoking smells....so does cow shit but does that stop you enjoying the countryside...no...so why let smokers ruin your night out..like cow shit its just part of the environment you are in and will be until the nanny state we live in ban it and as sleazy quite eloquently put.. that is not going to happen...and as for" just save yourself some money and pack in" ooooohhhh i wish it was that easy
i don't wish to start any arguments or bad feeling with this post i just want to point out that there are two sides to this and i can see both sides....... yes i want to quit as i think most( not all) smokers do..but its not that easy. if you want to get on your high horse and tell me i have no will power that's your choice......very ill informed but it is your choice....and i wont knock you for that. all i/we ask for is a little understanding that we are doing nothing wrong .......over to you

Yes but other people chewing gum doesn't affect your health does it....unless maybe you step on some gum that someone has spat out, and it sticks to your foot and you realise there's something sticky on the bottom of your shoe and it starts to really annoy you and then when you're halfway across a zebra crossing you become so distracted you stop to look down at your shoe and examine it and then a big 17 tonne artic wipes you out......or something.

there are plenty of pubs that do food that have already band smokers. so non smokers have a choice were to go. unfortunately gum is allowed everywhere
ps
artics weigh 44 tonne

The other day I was thinking about my childhood. God, we were poor and things were tough.
On the day my dad left, I took my first steps, and the last thing he did before going out of the door, was to trip me up!
How tough was your childhood?

Call that tough? Pah! My Dad used to trip me up too.... at the top of the stairs... after asking me to carry box of sharp knives .... you had it soft! lol
