Along with Insurance Premium Tax, the Road Fund License is one of the biggest rip-offs going.
It keeps an army of turkey voters at DVLA in jobs and it's far too easy to dodge (if ANPR was as good as it's claimed why are one in twenty of all vehicles still without a tax disc?).
The billions raised go into Gordon's coffers yet we see little re-investment in our third world road system. The quality of roads has visibily declined in the last ten years.
There's an efficient system already available to collect money that is unavoidable, it's called VAT but the problem is that politicians have to have all these little tax-raising dodges so as they can claim that income tax hasn't gone up and keep their election pledges.
Oh and let's not forget, the Chancellor is putting fuel duty up by ANOTHER 2p a litre next month as part of a previous budget announcement even though creaming off record amounts of income due to elevated oil prices.
And whilst questioning Railtrack, just ask who funds them and who is going to pay this £14m fine?
Oh, that will be us, the already over-taxed masses who continue to be viewed as cash cows by this disgrace for a Government. It effectively gives Gordon Brown and his useless Chancellor another £14m of our money to waste and removes money from improving the railway infrastructure.
But don't worry as the head of Railtrack, Ian McAllister, has just been made a knight so that makes it all ok then.
You really couldn't make it up. The whole thing stinks. Snouts....trough.....etc
Count us in for the afternoon drinkies too Anais (time for a separate thread maybe?)
You know it's going to pour down that weekend?
With unparalleled amounts of rain and mud breaking even last summer's record deluge and the SH campers being shown in various states of undress on live TV as they are rescued from their airbed rafts by lifeboats and helicopters.
How do I know this?
Well, it's the same weekend as the Glastonbury festival......
We will know a bit closer to the time if we can make it, waders at the ready!
Hi Jamie and welcome to the world of Macs. iChat is the best chat program there is, no advertising like you get with the Windows versions of and MSN, its full screen, multi user video-conferencing is superb.
You can download MSN Messenger from Micro$oft, the only thing which doesn't work is webcamming:

However if you do want to webcam with MSN users then you need to use Mercury from here (click on the Apple, bottom right corner) and use your usual MSN ID and password:

You can cam with users by using Messenger

And finally you can combine friends from iChat, , MSN, ICQ etc into one program by using Adium (webcam functionality coming soon):

On our Macs we use Adium, and iChat - gave up with MSN as we are allergic to anything touched by the hand of Gates. I hope this helps, any questions then please get in touch
Jaymar - why blame Labour you ask, well that's because they are the political party who are the incumbent Government and hence responsible for the introduction of laws into our land and I stand by my accusation of them having a nanny attitude towards telling people how to live their lives.
Have I heard of the Climbie case? Yes I have and a quick look at the inquest's website and the wikipedia entry makes for very depressing reading. She didn't die from smacking, it was due to a combination of the abuse she suffered (which included being burnt with cigarettes, being tied up for periods of longer than 24 hours and hit with bike chains, hammers and wire) plus hypothermia, multiple organ failure and malnutrition. Both she and her two guardians were well known to Social Services, the Police, the NHS and the NSPCC prior to her death and at the trial, the judge accused all of them of "blinding incompetence". You mention intervention well if those people charged with her protection had been doing their job properly (there were at least 12 occasions when she could have ben saved) she would have been alive today and in my opinion the linking of her tragic death to smacking is slightly distracting from this discussion - her death, as sad and avoidable as it was is well outside the scope of a mild admonishment to a child who may be misbehaving. The Climbie case is nothing more than institutional evil at its very worst and no new laws would have prevented it.
Where I do agree with you is the need to give Labour credit for taking on some of the recommendations (e.g. Surestart). If it prevents just one more Climbie then it's had some success.
What is it with this Labour government and their incessant desire to interfere in every aspect of our lives with their ever-widening of trying to nanny us?
If it's not smacking (impossible to ban, it will carry on), it's drinking (making 24/7 opening hours and then wondering why binge drinking is off the scale), or it's CCTV intrusion, DNA database expansion even for innocent people, opening up which organisations can view previously private personal data etc etc.
Nanny doesn't always know best but what amazes me is how these clowns are continually voted in. They may be Labour my name but they aren't Labour by nature.
Server 1 = Him
Ever reliable, does what it says on the tin, dependable, always up and running etc
Server 2 = Her
Temperamental, prone to mood swings and only available for 3 weeks out of 4
Oh, is that the time, I must be going bolt :bolt:
I am glad it wasn't just me who thought Henson was looking a funny colour yesterday. Adjusting the TV's colour balance had no effect - I couldn't work out if it was a slimmed down Tango man or an over-sized Oompa-Loompa running about before Mrs SW reminded me of his predilection for leg waxing and fake tans. Gav - leave it to the girls, you are a rugby player FFS.
Anyway England did the biz over the French with an 80 minute display, can't ask for any more than that after their woeful second-half performances of late.
AOL are consistently one of, if not the worst ISP's in the UK.
Use this site to compare their performance against the other broadband providers:

We are with Zen and if you want to see how they thrash AOL on every count, click this link:

Zen are consistenly up there and I would recommend them if anyone is thinking of moving to a new provider.
We tried this at Bristol's organic fair and left with a sneaky suspicion that the grass must have also contained a fairly fresh cowpat, so bad was the taste.
Any grassy benefit was soon undone as we then legged it to the nearest organic cider bar
I know this global warming is causing the sea-levels to rise, but didn't know it was this bad!
One minute the social's in Exeter, the next Wiltshire-by-the-Sea.
So it's Carry On Camping now then? Just as well Mrs SW's a dab hand at erecting things - just keep her away from the campfire beans....
You can also use your Mac's iSight webcam with Messenger.
iChat is still the best chat application there is and we have had some fun times using it with friends redface
I Googled our SH username and could instantly see links to our SH adverts, clicking it then took our browser to the full advert and their thumbnail pix.
Clicking on a pic then opened a new window asking me to log in so the full size version isn't available.
Anyone from outside SH can view the photo adverts section and use it's full search facility and this is how Google has acquired it's search results.
Now if you want to try something even scarier, put your postcode into Google. We found out our neighbour runs (on the side) an introduction agency for Filipino nurses to meet British men lol
We got one of the first Tom Tom Go 700's when they came out a few years ago and have used it in the UK, Europe and North America and it's been brilliant.
The only fault was when the temperature was -25 deg C and the windscreen sucker attachment sometimes gave up and the driver would have to make a deft catch as it fell off.
Deleted all the extra voices we "acquired" just leaving Jane - she sounds so authoritative as she gives directions. Now if only there was a Mistress Jane voice.....

I had better add fava beans and a nice chianti to today's shopping list.
So, is there anyone free who wants to visit us tonight?
innocent
Do your research if you are thinking of hiring them and be very very wary.
What is advertised isn't always what you will actually get. The adverts will show proper hot tubs full of happy smiling people but what actually arrives is little more than an inflatable paddling pool type thing that you may even have to provide the hot water for (ask yourself where you get 1000 litres of hot water from?) if it doesn't have a separate electric heater.
There's no way a portable pool can provide the volume of water via its pump compared to a permanent hot tub so you won't get any kind of therapeutic massasge.
Also ask the question of chemicals as without them hot tubs are veritable breeding grounds for lots of bugs (Legionnaires disease anyone?) and be careful.
Good topic Mr L, the saying "manners maketh the man" is more true today than ever before with what appears to be a general malaise in this country when it comes to basic civil decency and behaviour.
You only have to look around you at the way the parents of some children behave to understand why their offspring can be so obnoxious. The way the media glorify the antics of so-called celebrities is another facet to this general downturn in our nation's manners.
It costs nothing to say please and thank you but so many people don't or just can't be bothered. If we all made just that little bit more effort to do it once a day then Britain would be a happier place to live.
And just to make matters worse, wee Gordie Broon, when Chancellor, committed to increasing the fuel levy by a further 2p a litre from next April. Chances of Darling going back on that are absolutely zilch.
That's a 10p a gallon loading in old money which is a scandalous increase - don't forget the coffers are already bulging due to VAT collecting 17.5% of an ever-increasing cost.
I just can't understand how Bliar/Brown have been allowed to get away with their robbery policies by the voters for so long. The poll tax was nothing compared to what they have done with:
- selling off the UK's gold reserves at a knockdown price (to comply with an EU mandate - yeah right)
- raiding pension plans
- stealth taxes
- Council Tax doubling in 10 years
Man the barricades brothers and sisters as this could be a very long winter
We would be interested in this too.
Usually found in the Bristol chat room and like Waterbabe have been to the SH socials in this area.

if you need verification swcpl will vouch for us

Happy to confirm that these two are colossal perverts.
And meanwhile over in Sudan...

Once again, Islam shows its true self when its followers deem themselves to have been wronged, no matter how slightly. What the Sudanese fail to realise is their actions will be observed in the Western World adding further weight to the argument that Islam and our own culture can never be truly integrated.
In the meantime, our Government should immediately suspend all aid payments to Sudan.
Please add us to the list! Thanks for arranging it for after we get back, we'll be the ones with the suntans.
Anybody want to try and find our white bits?
Best of luck Mal in trying to sort it out.
Once recovered, it's a good idea to make regular back-ups of your Bookmarks too.
Bookmarks>Organise Bookmarks>File>Export
This file should be saved somewhere safe and you can then use the Import function to resurrect them if the problem comes back again.
Get yourselves a hot tub and hold a party for a few SH mates.
When they have their own friends round for a BBQ.
Never talked to us since - result!
How many times are we reminded by Islamic proponents that it's the religion of peace, understanding, tolerance and forgiveness and it's the West that is the big bad place.
Any sleight and they are up in arms, calling for death to the infidels yet see nothing wrong with their depiction of Jews as pigs and the subjugation of their own women.
Oh and we we won't talk about the Darfur massacre either, much better to threaten a woman with capitol punishment.
Our country has its faults but we can be proud of its hard-fought freedoms and tolerance.
And we would like to say thanks too! Mr & Mrs Somerset did a fantastic job for what can be a thankless task and it was great to get so many SH people together to meet friends old and new. It certainly beats lurking around dark carparks!passionkiss
Anais kicked things off in the afternoon with the pre-social drinkies and we mustn't forget her either.
And for those who didn't turn up, you missed a fab night. But why bother pretend you are going to come? smackbottom
The drinkies were good (well organised Anais!) and it was great to see people in the cold light of day rather than on a blurry webcam image.
Suze - we will pass the message onto Somers when we see them later on.
Right, time to do my hair......
Looking forward to seeing the final list of who's coming.
Any news Somerset?
