Protecting my lupins with an obscene amount of slug pellets the other day and now seeing lots of slimey ex-slugs around the pots.

Well, looking outside at the moment on a typical Bank Holiday Monday, we aren't getting enough global warming - it's a bit chilly here!
In all seriousness, there's sod all the UK can do in the grand scheme of things. If we shut up shop tomorrow and didn't emit another ounce of CO2 it just wouldn't make any difference when compared to what India, China and the USA pump out. In particular that latter country needs to address its usage of carbon products - 5% of the world's population is responsible for 25% of total C02 output, which is an unsustainable imbalance.
New Labour and their string-pullers in the EU have used the green theme to place even more taxes on us.
However, we all have a moral duty to reduce and more importantly reuse wherever possible. Start with the shops and give them back packaging once you have used the products. When pay-as-you-bin charges come in (and they will), why should you have to cough up for a second tax after already paying for it the first time.
Real ale gets the vote here too, nothing beats a pint of Old Thrunger or some suitable-named beverage.
We also pay homage to the hop at local beer festivals, it's noticeable how the average age is reducing (or is it just us getting older?).

I lived in France for a while and there, you have to shake hands with everybody each day that you meet them!! They would find it really strange if you didn`t !

So did I and after the entire office had wasted an hour going around shaking hands with everyone ("le tour") I would then go and wash mine. The reason being a hell of a lot of French men would walk straight out of the gents after going for a pee (or worse!) without bothering with basic hygiene and washing their own hands. God knows what bugs were being passed around.
Good topic Mr Lost, to us it's basic good manners to say hello when we enter (the room!) and also to say hello to others, sadly not all have the same values.
That said, the greeting which really gets my goat is the "oi oi" type!
Thanks for the invite Midschick, we would love to come along and say hello and goodbye xxx
If people can take the time to put their name down for a social via a forum then there's little or no reason not to do the same after the event to say thank you to those who took the time to do the organisation. Are their lives so busy they can't spare 5 seconds?
Sadly, as Mistress pointed out, the general decline in manners which is so prevalent in society also creeps in here from time to time amongst certain posters.
However I reserve the full venom for those who say they will come to a social and then never show up and can't be arsed to have the common decency and apologise.
We didn't realise there was a separate thread running so will also say a massive thanks to Anais and the Somersets for yesterday and also for all the fun SH'ers who came along - we had a fantastic time.
Count us in for the next one!
Nice one Somers, we really enjoyed the evening and look forward to the next one being announced soon.
Job well done Anais, thanks for organising the afternoon's drinkies.
It was great to see everyone again, count us in for the next one.
The biggest butternut squash they sell, a catering size tub of vaseline, a mop and some Jeyes fluid......
Party on!
And you know what the ultimate piss-take is?
It's paid monthly, about £60k a time, but is reduced if he gets a new job in that 12 month gardening leave period.
Poor lamb.
Bring on the summer, the longer and hotter the better:
- cold pints of cider
- nude beaches
- nice long evenings
- camping trips
- skimpy outfits for the ladies
- rubbing in aftersun
The only downside is a spot of hayfever but the pros far outweigh that one negative.
We just wish this global warming would hurry up and arrive!
I am all for it too, however it needs to be very, very strictly controlled (visions of a money-grubbing family carting rich Aunt Gertrude off "on a day trip" spring to mind).
However "Great" Britain is so morally and philosophically screwed up I just can't see it getting onto the statute books - we show more compassion to our animals than we do to our elderly who thanks to the advances in medical science now enjoy a longer life expectancy but are then sometimes left to rot due to a welfare state support system that has not kept up. I am a firm believer in living wills that would allow the relatives of those who have previously, when able to, expressed a desire for their life to be ended.
We do have family experience involving a relative who was a lifelong "battler" but who in the end asked to die with dignity, we and "the system" just couldn't fulfill that request. We knew Nan was going to die, so did the doctors and to watch her drawn-out death made us feel terrible.
As I said, we do more for our pets than we do for the wishes of those who want to end their life.
Just to show how behind this country is when compared to our European neighbours, this was on the BBC site the other day. It makes Britain look positively medieval, considering the NICE quango won't even give medication to those in England who suffer from the early stages of Alzheimers. But that's a debate for another day.

on a sad note bet we dont hear if he died, just like all news reports something sad mad or plain bad happens yet theres never a follow up story to tell you the ending /outcome

There's a Wikipedia site on Randy that I am sure will be updated so his progress can be followed.
Thanks for the great link, very thought provoking
It's got to be Bugs Bunny when he's playing with the brilliantly named Elmer Fudd.
Mel Blanc's distinctive voice when Bugs asks Elmer "What's up Doc?" is cartoon history.
Hosts of the Briz room on server 2 kicking loads of people at random without any warning, then just disappeared themselves.

The additional users can get in through the extras lounge. The absolute max is 80 (plus Ops) but us ordinary serfs can only get in if the number is 79 or below.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for that (did you mean 69?). Looks like us cheapskate users will have to put up with second best for a while longer then......
:violin:
Elliot - is that how it really works because the reality seems different from your description.
E.g. Lancelot>Pool currently has between 72-77 people in it, and the Beach Bar about 20.
It's impossible to get into the Pool from within Lancelot due to it being >70 (fair enough) yet the number is going up and coming down so how are these other chatters getting in? Joining Lancelot from Guin always puts us into the Beach Bar even though the Pool's never at 80 yet some people obviously can get in it as the number is going up.
Any ideas as to why?
Better late than never, so a happy birthday from us Mrs W and we hope that Mr W gave you a big one.
(present of course) :rascal:
Wow, so that's Christmas, birthday AND March 14th now.......
(PS only kidding, Mrs SW is far more generous, no BJ rations here!
For me, HSB set the tone for a lot of the police series we see today, it was years ahead of its time.
Edge of Darkness was 100% class too, UK TV at its finest.
How about Operation Good Guys from a couple of years back? The desert island special or the minorities awareness training were just brilliant
Ours is a lot more pixellated too when compared to the previous version of chat but it works fine in other programs.
Has the quality been compromised for the sake of server bandwidth?
Mr Lost, my already rock-bottom perception of our elected representatives now reaches new depths after their petty antics of the last few days and the broken promises on which they were elected by us, their masters.
The way Labour bang on about the Lisbon Treaty as not requiring a referendum is truly disgraceful and the way they have inhibited debate will go down as the point in which their true colours were shown.
Want to be scared of this "treaty"? Read some of these quotes....

So what's the alternaive? It's time for a new political party to rise up who represent the English and will stand up and be counted when it matters and not bend over to Europe.
But who will do this? I have no idea but am totally convinced it will have to happen in the next 10 years as "middle england" is not going to suffer the idiots we currently enjoy, we see little or no benefit for the additional taxes we pay and the way our country and its values are being eroded without our say is not going to be forgotten.
For a very thought-provoking read on this subject, check this out:

Can you please put our names down again Anais? It was great to meet everyone last time.
Stratford, don't forget to see the main Bristol social thread as you will need to be on that list too (which is full I believe).
Right with all that out of the way it's your round at the bar then Mr Lost.....
