methinks he's having all the fun he was aiming for when posting the OP, since you're giving him all this attention
for someone who was 28 when he moved to the uk, he's taking it a bit far.
also, he's a councilmember, which makes the whole thing smell of political stunt. methinks he was after his 15 minutes in the spotlights.
what would happen if a tourist came in and asked for something? I'm a bit particular when it comes to speaking languages (I guess it's in the family) but I also know that some people simply don't have the talent for it., my father speaks several and has lived for 13 years in the netherlands...even so, his dutch has always been crap.
in any country in europe, you'll find that most offices also carry instruction leaflets and similar "informative aids" in english, to help the foreigners that live there, maybe only for a couple of months.. why should england be different and consider it their right to pretend everybody else to learn english when more often than not anglophones (ok, americans mostly, but britons too) are upset when they're abroad and facing someone who doesn't speak english?
(of course I agree that whoever moves into a new country should try and adapt to this new country, and the language is the first thing to learn...but still..on this occasion the guy is taking it a bit far.
besides the sillyness of it all, I wonder if it was his legal right to apply such a ban at all. the postal service does not require the customer to speak english in order to be served, and I doubt this particular postmaster has the right to disregard this policy. methinks his publicity stunt might backfire, unless the royal mail decide not to pursue the matter, for fear of sparking a political debate.
and yes, had it been a white man pulling the same stunt, the postmaster himself declared during his interview on the bbc news, he would have faced severe criticism...since he speaks and feels he's talking as a true englishman, he should face the same sort of criticism..
I had a piss, but I'm not a pistol (or a pisspot)
I have hair, but am not harebrained
I've had fun but am not a fungus
I know how to cook, but I'm not cuckoo
the only times I am awake at dawn (except for jobrelated traveling reasons, that is) is when I haven't gone to bed at all..which means I probably had a good night, one way or the other, and I'm enjoying the dawn to cap it off, before going to bed.
definitely a night owl.
it goes to show though..the fact you haven't given up on him and he is now "back on your good side" so to speak, does mean that on the whole he is not a bad person, which I assume to be true in quite a number of these cases...and which makes it all the more difficult to judge, let go or, in some cases, even believe
I don't know, of course.
it could be anything, selfish interest, focus on her son at the expense of others, posing to "advance" the cause of those Downs who are capable and able to mix on a par with society..it could be anything. I'm just not prepared to discard the possibility that she's acting with the best interest of her son in mind, to the best of her ability.
this doesn't make her actions and words right in an absolute sense, but..there you go, maybe in her specific case, she's doing what Otto needs her to do.
or maybe not..
since we're talking hotels ...check out "hotel sex" on sky 3
all about naughty antics in hotels...recorded and witnessed by staff ;)
this is by no means a dig at england or the social costume here...it's just my experience as fairly recent immigrant.
when I moved to England, I was very surprised by the figures related to childbirth (my line of job requires me to have at least a broad idea of what those figures are)
it seems that the "single mother" phenomena is much more common than in other countries, and the same applies for underage mothers, children leaving school to give birth...
other social "phenomena" such as endemic binge drinking and "going on the pull" on a drunken fuck and casual sex at a very young age seem on average more common here than in other countries.
given this general picture that, I'm sure, is incomplete and debatable, I'm not so surprised that sex takes such a big role and assumes such relevance.
I haven't listened to the interview so I'm speculating, but I'm not so surprised that Otto was fixating on te sex aspects of the whole interview..after all that's what horiginated the whole buzz and I don't mean to be discriminating, but his words should be filtered through his "disability" and not just taken at face value.
as for the mother, I can only immmagine that the she wants to face one issue at a time, in the delicate and difficult matter of educating her disabled son.
I'm still not condoning the fact she is riding the media wave..but I do understand where she's coming from.
true..the disclaimer I copy-pasted got deleted by the admins
