The 3rd World argument is an academic one, but of course this kind of language has wider appeal to racists and xenophobes, who can use it to there own advantage (I'm not including you or anyone else I've encountered on this site in that btw!)..it's almost as spurious as saying 'all black men have got big cocks'...something I know isnt true .....from personal experience, sadly! lol

My point earlier was really voicing my frustration at the way racism and bigotry issues are waved in our faces every time we try to discuss a subject which is the concern of the whole of mankind . If someone could confirm that the AIDS epidemic was due solely to 3rd world immigration then I would support blanket testing and gun towers at Dover..it's just that in the heat of debate the easy targets get hammered and folks stop looking for the really productive answers to this world-wide problem. To illustrate the point, if all 3rd world immigration stopped, would the UK HIV rate decline?..probably not, cos all the people that believed that 'Africans started it' would get complacent and go round shagging unprotected again.

It would obviously have to come out of the taxpayers pocket..Same as the costs of running all the half way houses we operate for imigrants who have travelled half way across Europe to claim asylum.

All the folks that have travelled from hundreds/thousands of miles through 2 or 3 or more countries to get here should be returned to the first country they encountered after leaving their home country and made to apply for asylum there..I know its a great pity what is happening to many thousands of people across the world but why should we have to home them and support them?..
As for the tourist element then I suppose yes they would have to be tested as well...Or at least tested for diseases that are dominant in the country they have visited.

Was the first case of AIDS traced to the African continent? If so, so what? That doesn't help us with the problem we have now, as it does not illustrate that the African problem is any better or worse than ours, nor that African immigrants brought it over here.
Sure, many immigrants have come into the UK with AIDS, but many Brits have left without it and come back with it...irrespective of what part of the world they have been visiting and I guess many Brits have also infected people from other countries whilst visiting.

Surely the thought of dying a very slow and nasty death should be the deterrent here. Why should the government act as the nanny. You have to know that if you have unprotected sexual contact with a professional sex worker, here or abroad, that you are putting yourself bang right in the middle of the high-risk area. It's nothing to do with colour of skin or the language you speak, it's all to do with stupidity.
Until about 15- 20 years ago knowledge of HIV wasn't so widespread and people did die of ignorance. There is no excuse now. We teach safe sex in schools. Condoms are free from Family Planning Clinics.
We are lucky in this country. To blame the poor and the down-trodden and the supressed is unforgivable.

The way we read Judy's post. Judy was saying that people from certain areas of the world were more likely to bring in HIV than people from other parts of the world. Therefore to prevent the HIV rate in UK increasing there should be testing of the people from the high risk areas.

Assuming we were correct in our definition;
In Angola today, there is an outbreak of Marburg virus, very similar to Ebola. 93% mortality rate. But many, many more times as infectious than HIV. You get it, you usually die in three days or so, in the worst way imaginable. Now if the W.H.O. can't contain it and it spreads thro Angola should the UK ban people from Angola coming to the UK. The incubation period is a few days by the way. Or to put it another way, you could catch it in Angola, be OK on the flight to Heathrow and fall ill one day later in Manchester or anywhere.
If you say yes, to protect the people of UK the Gov should stop people from Angola (the high risk area) coming here then are you a racist?

..of course when seeking a solution to our domestic HIV problem, the consequences of mass immigration from high risk areas should be considered. But there are many causes for the increase of HIV infection in the UK and 3rd world immigration is probably a small element in this.
Please excuse my flippancy, but how many immigrants from high risk areas actually come into the UK every year and does every Nigerian/Jamaican want to drag away some poor unsuspecting Brit to have unprotected sex with them?? (Maybe better not to ponder too much on that one!)
The number one offender surely has to be our own (continuing) complacency in new sexual liaisons. The way I read Judy's post, it seemed to particularly implicate 3rd world immigrants for our domestic AIDS situation.

I'm sorry Judy, but I have to agree with Dave /Jags here...the 3rd World undeniably had/has a problem with the proliferation of AIDS..but the surface should be scratched to see a little further. Many of these countries have a highly lucrative trade in 'sex tourism' where invariably holidaymakers of Western origin seek out sexual liaisons with poor people, who due to their economic circumstances will take more risks than people that work in the sex industry over here...light the blue touch paper and stand well back..the outcome is obvious...if there are any statistics that exist confirming the AIDS infection rate of 3rd world immigrants coming into the UK, I would like to see them and compare to Western tourists and workers abroad bringing it back into their indigenous cultures.
I found Judy's comments upsetting because they have the tendency to stereotype (negatively) a whole community of people and makes an already hard life, even harder for them. If there really is an issue of HIV positive immigrants coming over here and infecting, then we have a decision to make about blanket testing everyone that comes to live here..and most of all exercise caution over everyone we choose to have unprotected sex with...nuff said.
