roughtly speaking without seeing the house a 2,5 kva long run generator with a Electronic AVR (Automatic voltage regulation) is about £600 (A Proper generator not these 120 quid things in netto's)
A change over switch is about £300
Instalation costs and associated wiring about another £250
add £120 - 150 if you require automatic startup on generator
if you don't require a generator thats going to run the pc you could use one with a standard avr which is more like £300

one tip from me, if your driving a 4x4 like my landrover at this time of year with the bad weather, drive round with your free wheeling hubs switched in.
That way if you need 4 wheel drive you won't have to get out to switch them in, in a panic.
I agree with sheddy get your anti-freeze checked and if you drive a desiel get the the glow plugs checked.
Also check the condition of your battery and wether your altenator is charging correctly, most garages will do this for a small fee.
amazes me the amount of people who need the RAC/AA out this time of year because there battery is knackered.

Bubbly lorraines router is not seeing the adsl signal, before i go down there tomorrow anyone got any suggestions, she's tried swapping microfilters and completly rebooting both router and pc.
