Sorry to pour cold water on this thread, but what gives certain members the right to call other people's tastes into question with generalistic and disparaging comments such as 'crap' and 'shite'?
This is addressed in particular to HornyLondon and SiGo. I've noticed that SiGo also did this with the British sitcom thread. So what if one person likes the Darkness or Coldplay and another doesn't? Does it really lower a person in your eyes if they prefer the Vicar of Dibley to Blackadder?
Come on, fellahs. Everyone has a right to personal opinion, but you have no right to disparage others' because they do not coincide with your own. By all means disagree as is your right, but do so constructively please.

Will, I need a word. Kindly step into my office, would you? Have you had breakfast? Condemned men should always eat heartily you know...
Now I've been looking at dates for when BlueEyes can wear her hat...
Oh, bye then!

I suppose if I am absolutely honest I don't see myself as a non-smoker or former smoker just yet. The urge is still there, the desire to smoke, but the odd thing is that I don't want to because there are too many important people relying on me not to.
Today I sat in my favourite cafe with a hot chocolate. The waitress saw me reading Allen Carr's Easyway to Stop Smoking. "Oh, I read him four years ago," she said. "Haven't smoked since!"
Then it was the turn of the manageress who explained that she was a smoker who wanted to give up, again. It ended with a time-honoured confabulation of women giving mutual support; the former smoker, the novice ex-smoker and the would-be quitter. I didn't read much of my book, but I left feeling reassured and happier than I went in. That could have been the hot chocolate of course, but I don't think so.
There is one thing about Carr's book which has stuck in my mind. I won't quote the whole book, but this in particular is an important distinction in how you view stopping smoking.
Essentially he says, by using the phrase 'giving up', makes it sound as though you are making a sacrifice in stopping smoking. In fact, as he points out you are sacrificing nothing, but gaining in health, wealth, wellbeing and happiness. So, I'm no longer giving up, I'm now quitting.
Lots of love to my fellow quitters

Gentlemen, gentlemen, this is all very sweet - I've never received so many proposals - and it's very flattering.
However, have you stopped to consider that i might actually accept one of these proposals? Spurious they might be, but they're in writing!
Perhaps I'm getting a little tired of the single life, perhaps it is time to settle down? Now which proposal will I accept?

I think you've raised a valid point Andrew in the defence of single men, you are not all the same and you do contribute a role to swinging; but it should be said that when single men have been criticised it has been for often equally valid points such as lack of respect, rudeness, not taking 'no' for an answer, or seeing their gender as an immediate passport for sexual encounters.
It has been proven that there are several single (or single-acting) men on this site who have shown respect, wit, humour, kindness and decency in their posts, and have become valued members of the cafe. There are, however, a group of single men who have shown none of those characteristics - they are the ones who tend to get short shrift and mickey-taking.

Thanks for the reminder NiceGuy!
Okay, it's Day Eight, and so far I haven't grossly insulted anybody (to my knowledge), yelled a lot or commited GBH on anything more defenceless than a Somerfield Chocolate Brownie dessert. Will is still speaking to me, the forbearing soul.
The craving is there - catching me unawares at odd moments. Mornings are easier to contemplate without the ritual caffeine and nicotine breakfast, I'm sleeping better, and my health is still improving.
One confession... I tried to buy cigarettes on Saturday in Tesco's. My daughter reminded me, quite forcefully, that I didn't smoke anymore. So I didn't buy the cigarettes and I thanked my daughter. I think I just had a mind lapse, particularly as I had my infant Gorgon with me.
Everyone needs their own personal minder - anyone like to borrow mine for a while? Comes highly recommended, very vigilant, makes Ruby Wax sound like Mrs Tiggywinkle. Anyone? Please...?

I completely agree with your point of view and you have my sympathy. I experienced exactly the same thing a few months ago. I objected to references to drugs and the use of bad language and took the brunt of their animosity. It was extremely upsetting and very unpleasant.
I also agree that regular chatters should uphold the room rules when mods and sysops aren't in. The room moderators do a fantastic job, particularly over the last few days, but they are all volunteers and they do have lives and sleep patterns outside the chatroom. If the regular room users don't uphold the rules, or indeed enforce them, it will become a free-for-all for all the idiots in Christendom and, as FredFlintstone points out, the chatroom will be lost.
It's a question of choice, isn't it? Do chatroom users choose to use, abuse or lose?

Hello Oldrcpl and welcome to SH!
I hope you join in with the threads here in the cafe and get to know us all. You don't have to be slightly deranged to post here, but it helps.
Have fun in the forum!

Perhaps the times aren't changing so rapidly - there is hope after all, just a little.
When I was a kid I used to spend hours going through my Granny's ragbag, cobbling fabric together. Now, although my own daughter is a highly sophisticated and mature rock chick, she does the same with my stuff and has spent the last couple of days customising T-shirts. I taught her to sew and embroider when she was six and she still enjoys it.
She can also erect flatpack furniture without help and knows the difference between an allen key and a screwdriver. Washing up? Now there's a mystery. We do have a dishwasher - it's called Mum.

Hello N,
The plight of the single male has been discussed on the forum ad infinitum and the advice generally boils down to the following:
Become a player in the cafe, let people get to know you as you get to know them, and you gain a distinct advantage over those single males who post single-line ads in Let's Meet Up. Remain polite, respectful and humorous.
Meets are increasingly based on trust and prior aquaintance from a personal safety point of view, and of course as a result of the recent adverse publicity.
I hope you find what you are looking for here, but you are more likely to find long term friends than short term shags.

Hi Kriss,
Every sympathy! I thought my nick was obviously girly. I still get asked in the chatroom am I 'm or f'? I'm often tempted to reply with 's' for Sappho or 'h' for hermaphrodite... but I think that would cause confusion!
I do wonder if there is a site out there called 'Frontal Lobotomies R Us', and they send their members to us... ?

Does my avatar look like me? Hell, I wish it did!
Yes, you build up mental pictures of people, often supplemented by what they have let slip about themselves, but I've met several people from SH socially - and I have never been disappointed. More often I've been delighted.

Hello Don - and welcome to SH!
Despite recent events which have provoked some reticence on the part of regulars here, you'll find us friendly and willing to accept a new and articulate member with open arms. I can only suggest that you allow us to get to know you as you get to know us, and you have certainly made a most excellent beginning in that direction.
Therefore, have fun in the forum!

Day Three - don't worry, I won't keep up this diary for long!
This morning was the worst, the one where I really wanted to smoke. Every sympathy Byron - I'm with you there! I prowled around the house trying to find things to do until I decided to take myself off in to Shrewsbury for staples. My staplegun is empty and I need it for putting up silver stars for a school function at the end of the week.
Okay, I got my staples... three hours after arriving in Shrewsbury! Inexplicably I also acquired a CD, a skirt, a blouse, a velvet top, a bra and thong set in pale pink satin, a very rude T-shirt (to be unveiled at the Midlands Munch), shoes to match the skirt and blouse, handbag to match the shoes, a christening gift - oh and Allen Carr's Easyway to Stop Smoking.
I dragged my purchases back to the car and called Will. "Don't ever let me go shopping unsupervised again!" However, I was on a serious high! I know I won't be when I get the bank statement!
Pretty twitchy this evening, but I've perused the forum as usual. A friend called who was once a 40 a day Marlboro smoker. He hasn't smoked in eight years. Lots of advice about taking Vitamin supplements - ascorbic acid, Vit B12 and MultiVitamins. Another trip to Boots in the offing.
I hope I sleep better tonight - last night I was constantly woken up by that dry cough associated with recovery from smoking. My friend says give it three weeks to start feeling better and to lose the cough. I am going to be such a bitch at the end of that three weeks thanks to nicotine withdrawal and disturbed sleep! Apologies in advance! (I think Merdith Brooks' 'Bitch' will become my theme.)
Love to Kit (how was the first day?), Kat (are you getting a very dry mouth too?), BlueEyes, Byron and Bassdude - and anyone else going through this. It isn't fun but it has to be worth it doesn't it?
